pictures from the city

some of these might not make any sense without explanation, but i will be going back this evening and adding captions where appropriate. in the meantime, take a look at some of the sights from this past weekend.

or so i thought

the fog looked really cool when i took the bus into the city from new jersey this afternoon. it was just thick enough to give everything a kind of gaussian haze. however, the fog is no longer cool. the fog sucks, as a matter of fact. there is apparently enough fog to warrant a grounding of almost every flight out of laguardia, including mine. so i am stuck here for the night and we will try this again in the morning. this time out of newark.

i love this city. i love these people. but right now, i’d really love to just leave…

on the way out

i have about five minutes left on this easy everything account. i have had a lovely time in new york. in brief, i have been to the hayden planetarium, taken the staten island ferry, found nothing on the staten island side, wandered around street festivals in greenwich village and around union square, saw a horrible street swordsman in washington square followed by some of the best amatuer showman i have ever witnesses, ate apple ice cream, was surprised by alisha silverstone in the graduate and let down by the other two stars, saw “kissing jessica stein” at a cool little art house, went backstage at the city opera, went to yogi’s bar and….

i’m out of time and on my way home.

safe and sound

in brief. it rained most of the day, which prompted the purchase of what will here-to-fore be known as the Coolest Umbrella Ever Made. as it is much colder than i planned, i also purchased the World’s Best Black Hat from a street vendor. somewhere in there i saw some modern art, watched a flock of new york’s finest lining up on fifth avenue, had some curry and saw suzanne vega. oh, and there is a sixty foot tall spiderman creeping down the front of the loew’s theatre on 42nd street near times square. rock!

ground control to just about anyone

is this thing on? so i am heading back out of town again. hopping on a plane bound for NYC in the morning for a little weekend exposure to the big city. yeah, i know i was just there, but there is just something magnetic about manhattan. times square alone is enough to make one reconsider their place in the grand scheme of things.

as a parting gift, i am leaving you with a little something extra for your ears. i guess you could call it “radio grabbingsand” but that would imply that it’s live, which it is not. grabbingsand on-air is hosted at live365. its really more like a little river of sound just waiting for you to dip in whenever you’d like. two playlists are going to be rolling this weekend, the spring 2002 mix and the new chillout 2002 mix. if you listen at midnight, four or eight o’clock (am or pm), you will get the chillout mix. if you listen around two, six or ten o’clock (am or pm), the spring mix ought to be playing. they are streaming at a high enough rate to sound decent, but low enough to accomodate folks listening via dial-up.

hey, its something new. new is good, right?

the calm before..

details and a full report to follow. promise.

i wonder what time it is

ask the banana. maybe he knows.

oh yeah. that’s what time it is.

oh. my. dear. lord

using only the power of email, my roommate has managed to catch the attention of a local alt-rock deejay. he has convinced him that our house would make for the perfect broadcast venue. how? well, with promises of a bevy of beautiful women and free food and alcohol, that’s how. we have none of these things readilly available, you must understand. even if we did, i am pretty damned sure i don’t want to play host to whatever hangers-on might accompany this deejay. and when is this going to happen? apparently, this friday night.

if you could see me now, you would see me shaking my head in dazed wonder with a look of “why” across my face…

to see her, happy

you might’ve noticed, but it is likely you didn’t. the goings-on to the right, they seem to lack the same relevance they once did. i know i need to address this issue, come up with some new manner of menu-ing and navigating, but i’ve just grown so comfortable with the way things are — a bittersweet echo of my disreaction to various affective stimuli throughout my days… but let us return to the point, shall we?

you might’ve noticed that the links distractions change every few weeks, an addition here, a removal there. the purges occur when a link dies, whether actually or philosophically. example: aint it cool news is out, chud is in. new listees are usually sites of people i know or have linkwise met through one way or another, and only those sites that are consistently worth a visit. it is a quiet acknowledgement, a tip of the hat. however, there has been an addition in the last week worthy of a mention louder than a whisper.

the mix CD posts of last week drew a steady trickle of email, and one in particular was from a fellow atlantan with an exceptional site. in introduction, she made the comment that we’d enough in common to perhaps be secretly related, a shared alma mater being but one of the similarities. she is grace. and regardless of what you might think of that college in the georgia mountains, regardless even of your general opinion of me, you need to know that grace is the caretaker of a word garden called roman lily. if you are a local, you will find a little joy in her observations of atlanta’s secrets and memories. and if you’re not a local, you were certainly a child at one time. the archives are two years deep and i have yet to find an entry that failed to make me grin or ponder or wonder. so go. you owe it to yourself.

and grace, thank you. i hope you don’t mind the attention.

no minis. no flights. no big house. no island with a castle. and, worst of all, no archipelago.

oh, well….
