it has begun. dragoncon. i’m back again. the first day has come and gone, leaving my feet hurting and my eyes blurring. i am sitting here and i have every intention to write about the furious comic book legends, the disgruntled stars of television-gone-by, the strange popularity of an australian show about survivalist teenagers, the rabid gathering of blonde vampire afficionados, the obvious presence of atlanta’s finest, the amused looks on the faces of hyatt security guards, the sad absence of a law against undeserved corsetry, the welcome availability of hotel wireless access… but it is after 1am and i’ll have to start it all over again in about eight hours.
zzzzzzzzz.
specifically, warren ellis — author of mind-expanding comics like transmetropolitan, the authority, hellblazer — wants to see your part of the world via your digitalcam or phonecam. why?
It’s Wednesday. I want to see the world, please.
fair enough. and people have been more than happy to oblige. and me?
eh, the batteries are dead in my camera…. damn the luck.
allow us to introduce the latest members of our household.
this is daeva. a girl.
this is daksha. a boy.
daeva and daksha came to us from cats in the cradle, a no-kill shelter in roswell. we found them about a month and a half ago during the shelter’s weekend visit to the roswell petsmart. they were in the same cage and were obviously a matched set. we wanted to take them home, but the apartment was in disarray and we knew there was a lot of painting ahead of us after the move. however, mrs fuller from the shelter was kind enough to keep them until we had moved completely into our new home.
and today they arrived. so far, we’ve discovered that daksha has never seen his own reflection in a mirror and has a definite dislike of ceiling fans. daeva, however, is absolutely fearless and likes to get daksha in what can only be called a feline full nelson. and best of all, as odd as both might be, neither of them appear to be malicious or psychotic. for a person with a history of mean-ass cats, this is such an amazing thing…
“There are hard cases and there are easy cases. This is an easy case,” said U.S. District Judge Denny Chin. “This case is wholly without merit both factually and legally…. Parody is a form of artistic expression protected by the First Amendment. The keystone to parody is imitation. Mr. Franken is clearly mocking Fox.”
isn’t it refreshing when the judicial system actually demonstrates a little common sense?
(confused? catch up.)
holy cow.
just when you think you’ve seen or heard every possible comeback from the 80s, along comes something to kick you square in the memories.
that’s right, folks. they’re older, they’ve got less hair, they’ve all got families and children now, but that’s not going to stop the…
2003 Stryper Reunion Tour!
what? you have to be kidding me. really? oh, come on. you just need to take a good look at that 2nd place “cola wars” trophy and get used to it. you’re attempts to be something outrageous and radical, they fail. one of the primary rules of life is that one should not consume blue food. this also applies to blue beverages. gatorade and powerade? they’re exceptions to the rule because anyone that is consuming either product is doing so with the happy knowledge that both are entirely man-made and not subject to the laws of nature. and now you’ve decided to weigh in with something new and exciting…
pepsi vanilla. you hear that? that is the audible sound of my eyes blinking like giant metal shudders in disbelief. you actually think you’re going to impress or sway those of us who’ve already tried your substantially superior competition? vanilla coke had precedence. before coca-cola put it in bottles, it was asked for in soda shops, in waffle houses and even in trendy bars (though in it’s more potent form of stoli vanil and coke). when was the last time anyone ever asked for a pepsi and vanilla anything? i’m thinking 1976, back when it was the beverage of choice for laverne defazio of milwaukee. but even that’s not true, because laverne consumed pepsi and milk! not vanilla! and only then when she was upset because of something lenny & squiggy said. maybe that could be your new, xtreme idea, eh?
feeling depressed with a big L on your shirt?!? drink new milky pepsi!
[thank you gray for pointing out this abomination.]
“I’m not sure what happened, but while we were recording OHIO, we made peace finally with the idea that this music has a lot to do with why we’re here. Writing and recording songs is just what we do, and I think we’re letting go of the suspicion that maybe there is something more important lurking around the corner. While we were making OHIO, I had the calm but happy realization that barring some unforeseen catastrophe, we’ll still be making records 20 years from now. It’s good to know what it is that you’re meant to be doing.”

(New OtR double-album out today.)
isn’t it strange? the simple diplomacy of candlelight seems to draw the eye’s attention away from our differences while showing us just how alike we all really are.
basra.
gaza city.

new york city.

apart from the debut album itself, one of the finest recordings of jeff buckley has to be the 1993 EP called live at sin-e’ — it is also teasingly brief, weighing in at only four tracks. but those tracks are simply amazing. the opening guitar riff to “eternal life” is so spare, so matter-of-fact, it barely betrays the impending rhythm that soon surrounds you, traps you and gives you no choice but to listen absolutely to jeff’s strangely prophetic tale of loss and possibility, of things unanswered.
And as your fantasies are broken in two
did you really think this bloody road
would pave the way for you?
You better turn around
and blow your kiss hello to life eternal…
i’ve made no secret of my admiration for the late dream brother, and so i am very happy to hear news of a live at sin-e’ re-release. and this time, we get more than four tracks. far more. actually, we get 33 tracks spread across two CDs. 21 songs, including covers of “calling you” and “i shall be released” — this just might be the CD that breaks my multi-month new purchase hiatus…
