back to ohio

“I’m not sure what happened, but while we were recording OHIO, we made peace finally with the idea that this music has a lot to do with why we’re here. Writing and recording songs is just what we do, and I think we’re letting go of the suspicion that maybe there is something more important lurking around the corner. While we were making OHIO, I had the calm but happy realization that barring some unforeseen catastrophe, we’ll still be making records 20 years from now. It’s good to know what it is that you’re meant to be doing.”

Yep — I’ve got my copy on order. Should be in my greedy hands within a couple of days.

Here’s a sneak preview of a lengthy article on OTR that’s being published in next month’s issue of PASTE magazine (which is a great read, by the way, keep your eyes peeled for it):

“‘Theres stuff on OHIO thats so uncool, its almost funny,’ Linford says. ‘Like “Cruel and Pretty.” Its just so uncool with its little piano melody and pedal steel and three-part harmony. And even doing the gospel song. We love to embrace our uncoolness.’

“That also extended to the way the duo approached songwriting. Linford explains, ‘That whole arms length thing, that ironic detachment thats so en voguewhen it comes to writing or music, we dont need that. At the end of the day, its not really helpful. Put something on the line, risk something, say something thats really you and take what comes. I guess I would rather risk being offensive or nave or ill-informed or whatever. I would like to think that I put some real part of myself on the line. Not everyone is going to like it but maybe itll be meaningful to somebody.’”

    Go Linford!
