The Opening Acts

“Ultimately, the basic issue is whether America will provide global leadership that springs from the unity and the integrity of the American people, or whether extremist doctrines, the manipulation of the truth, will define America’s role in the world.

At stake is nothing less than our nation’s soul.”

- President Jimmy Carter, Boston, 26 July 2004 (Read On.)

“Americans long to be united. After 9/11, we all just wanted to be one nation. Not a single American on September the 12, 2001, cared who won the next presidential election.

All we wanted to do was to be one country, strong in the fight against terror, helping to heal those who were wounded and the families of those who lost their loved ones, reaching out to the rest of the world so we could meet these new challenges and go on with our democratic way of life.

The president had an amazing opportunity to bring the country together under his slogan of compassionate conservatism and to unite the world in the struggle against terror.

Instead, he and his congressional allies made a very different choice.”

- President Bill Clinton, Boston, 26 July 2004 (Read On.)

And that’s only on day one.

Not Better Than Cats

You can find my perhaps-too-forgiving review of Catwoman over at JIVE. Meow.

Sidenote: It appears that my super-duper-automatic list of fellow blog-links (generated by blogrolling) is not running down the left-hand side like it should. Maybe it’s just a minor glitch, but I might have to go back to hand-coded goodness if it doesn’t reappear.

Needs More Neko

There should’ve been a Neko Case song on at least one of the Kill Bill soundtracks. Really.

Yes, I’ve been slack. I’m behind. But I’ve been busy legitimately. And there are a couple of rounds in the chamber already. One movie review should be done this evening and another tomorrow or the next day, then I’ll give some critical attention to the new Roots album.

Thank Heaven for listening to music at work. Mornings go much better with Big Daddy Kane rapping out of your iPod. “It’s ‘88 … time to set it straight.”

Exceptionally Careless

Depending on your point of view, this amazing cover of a familiar love song is either whipsmart parody at it’s very best or two talented men who need to collaborate more or just plain brilliant. If you can’t tell from the voices, it’s Ben Folds and Rufus Wainwright, caught in a nostalgic mood last month at Wolftrap.

In unrelated news, you should know that there is no provision in place to postpone a national election — and there are those who wish such a provision existed.

Keeping the Kids Shoe’d and Clue’d

Georgians! Ready your wallets! It is time for another Sales Tax Holiday! Need shoes? Don’t buy them yet! Need some college-ruled notebook paper? Hold your horses! Shopping for a new printer? You can wait just a little longer. The blessed (and extended) weekend will be July 29th through August 1. Of course, there are rules and regulations and stipulations and exceptions. You can find them all here.

In other news, I’ve an MMORPG-themed article over at JIVE about how incredibly un-l33t I am. Additionally, you can find my contribution to a collaborative Spider-Man 2 review … and an excellent assessment of King Arthur by mine truly. Enjoy.
