Thumbs On

Sometimes a gimmick creeps into your work. Sometimes, such gimmicks are fun.

Hence, my rather encyclopedic review for Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy.

I think you’re the only person I’ve seen so far that not only liked the movie, but really liked it. All the other reviews I’ve read have said that either it missed capturing what they liked about the books (the Fans), or it made no sense to them at all (the Uninitiated).

What I didn’t address in the review are the concerns of the totally Uninterested and Unwilling. Frankly, I could care less if they like it or not, because this film is not for them. At all.

As for the Fans that find fault, well, I’m sorry. No movie is ever going to top the images the book inspired in every individual’s head. For what it is, this rendition of the story is pretty amazing. And with Hollywood’s lack of concern for things like plot, continuity, history and most of all a fanbase, it could’ve been soooo much worse.

I was completely interested and willing. I am a not a ‘Fan’ (in the sense of pure fanaticism), but I thoroughly enjoyed the books. However, I went in to the movie with a blank mind, having no intention of comparing it to the book, TV show, etc. I didn’t like it.

I just don’t think it was a good movie. In order to hit all of the high points, the story moved too fast. All of the ideas and notions that were being presented never had time to be fully digested before something completely unrelated was suddenly thrust onto the screen. Thusly, the story came across as a bit incoherent at times. I was simply underwhelmed.

I honestly feel that I would have been far more entertained listening to 2 hours worth of Guide entries…but that’s probably related to my undying love of Stephen Fry.

I hope you all stayed for the Guide entry during the credits. It was very funny.
