Thirty-One Years Ago Today

Super Me, Halloween 1975

This is little me on the front porch of our horse. The costume is not a costume, but pajamas. The most awesome pajamas ever, I think. The only things missing from little me are the right shoes. Boots, actually. Red ones. I asked for them for Christmas, but realized quickly that actual knee-high pointed Superman boots might be hard to find, so I changed my wish to a far more reasonable request for red socks.

I got those.

This was my favorite Hallowe’en costume, though a few others compete for second place. The Shogun Warrior costume was exceptionally cool, if maybe a bit too plastic. Kept the mask from that one for years. I was “backwards man” once, wearing my clothes in reverse, but nobody got it.

So what about you, dear readers … what were your favorite costumes from kidhood?

my favorite costume when i was little was the bunny rabbit outfit my mom made from my pajamas (the kind with the feet attached). she stuck a cotton ball on my butt and floppy ears on my head. voila! a bunny who was very excited she got to wear her pajamas around the neighborhood.
i also enjoyed my frida kahlo costume from several years ago.

I had a one of those costume-in-bag things where the body of the character is printed on a vinyl dress and the head is a very uncomfortable plastic mask held you your head with a piece of elastic. To me it was the coolest thing in the world because I was Strawberry Shortcake.

Also, I had Super Woman underoos that I wore all day as well as green fur Oscar the Grouch pajamas.

I never had a costume I liked as a kid. Seriously. My mom and dad were the “make your own” type, so we had to come up with our own costumes every year. And the truth is that I was a lazy child. So I always did the bare minimum needed to be counted as a trick-or-treater. Then, I would spend all night hoping I didn’t run into my friends, because my “bloody hobo” costume would never match up to their store-bought Star Wars stuff.

I can tell you the one costume I hated most, though. I went as a girl to a Halloween party when I was in seventh grade. BOTH of the kid’s parents thought I WAS a girl who showed up out of costume. That will do some damage to a 13-year-old’s ego.

Oh, that is too damn cute. Now I really want to find old photos of my costumes from childhood. One year, I was a gypsy. Is that racially insensitive? I didn’t know any better… I was 4, my mom put the costume together. Actually, I’m pretty sure I have a photo of that one at home. Maybe I’ll break out the scanner tonight after the luscious dinner party.
