Revenge Is Like A Poison

It’s a good trailer, though I think I prefer the earlier teaser. I don’t fear that this preview reveals too much, as the big surprise — or at least what I think will be the big surprise — isn’t telegraphed at all.

My concern is with Tobey Maguire. He’s been the perfect Peter Parker up to this point, but only because his demanded range of emotion has been specifically mapped. Be the awkward geek, be the devoted nephew, be the neophyte hero, and (to a lesser extent) be the conflicted love interest. All of these stem from an honest desire to do good and to make the right decisions.

Secret Wars #8But with Spider-Man 3, Maguire’s Parker has to deal with one of the darkest chapters in Spider-Man’s canon. This time, Peter gets the black suit, introduced and explained as an symbiotic alien presence in Marvel’s Secret Wars limited series in 1984. The suit augmented Spidey’s powers to such an extent that he almost forgets his late Uncle Ben’s sage advice: “With great power comes great responsibility.”

So I’m not sure if Tobey Maguire can pull it off. It could be argued that his work on Seabiscuit put him in a kind of dark place, but did it really? All the same, I’ll be rooting for him next May, most likely on opening night. And if he makes it work, I’ll declare him a far better actor than I ever realized.
