Friday Catbloggin’ (And Other Items Of Note)

This is Daksha. He had his teeth cleaned last week. Professionally. Since cats lack the patience of your average human, major dental work of the feline variety warrants anesthesia. Otherwise, the individual attempting to precisely clean the sharp, pointy teeth of said feline might need anesthesia of their own. Now, as we are over-protective cat parents, Nikki and I were a little nervous about just how Daksha would handle the whole situation.

Our vet’s office is right in the middle of my morning commute, so I got to drop him off last Thursday morning. He hates the car and lets us know everytime he rides in it. Upon arrival, I signed a release form about his anesthesia. When I handed it over, the nurse said that they might have to shave off a bit of his fur for an IV. “Okay,” I said. “That’s fine.”

Even after I got to work, I kept wondering how he was doing. So it was quite a relief to get the phonecall around 10am, letting us know that his teeth were now clean, but that they would be keeping him for observation until after 2pm, just to make sure he was okay. Basically, they didn’t want him to go home stoned.

A week and a day later, Daksha is doing just fine. He had a couple of days where he looked at the world with a bit of a squint, but since then he’s been eating fine, playing with his sister and just being generally awesome. Of note, however, is the “bit of his fur” they shaved for the IV. It’s basically a band that goes all the way around his right front [insert word for feline forearm here]. We know it’ll grow out, but he still looks sometimes like a peg-legged pirate. Other times, when he steps in just such a way, he looks like a fashion victim wearing a single Ugg Boot.

Other Items Of Note!

  • Gray has a birthday. I think it is either today or tomorrow. Either way, the man deserves your wishes of wellness, so get to wishing!
  • Also, H. P. Lovecraft loved cats too. And not for dessert, thank you very much.
  • We’re going to see Pan’s Labyrinth this evening. I’ve a feeling that this will be another of those movies that will leave me wishing I still did film reviews semi-professionally. Gray will be there as well. If you were going, you could wish him well in person.
  • If you were curious, this is what an invincible man looks like.

Whenever Oscar gets his teeth cleaned (which also involves drugging him lest he rip someone’s finger off), he is stoned for three days solid. Maybe these “vets” don’t really know what they are doing…

I have a bit of advice about cats and anaesthesia. Firstly, there are 2 kinds, the IV type and the gas type. The IV type is a LOT more risky than the gas type. Esp if your cat is more than 8 yrs old.

My cat Missy (about 5 years old) did not come out of the IV type when she had to have minor surgery and it ended up being a harrowing experience at the Dekalb-Gwinnett emergency room. She was so down that she almost died. Fortunately the anti-anaesthetic drugs worked and she came through it, but I am extremely cautious about IV anaesthesia now. Feline metabolism is a very tricky thing and it varies widely from cat to cat.

Dorie: your cat was in distress. If the animal is not up and about within a couple of hours, it means that it is not metabolising the drugs. When this happens, it requires different drugs to undo the first ones. You and your cat were lucky!

I strongly encourage the use of gas for things like teeth cleanings and other minor surgeries. Of course sometimes full anaesthesia is necessary, but I wanted to pass along my experience in the hope that no one else should have to go through it.

I’m glad your kitty is fine and with FABulous shiny teeth!
